Larger foraminifera biostratigraphy of the Paleocene and Eocene of platform Ukraine
Boris F. Zernetsky
Abstract

A summary and a critical revision of the Paleocene-Eocene nummulitic data of Ukraine and an analysis of the academic publications on larger foraminifera of the Carpathian-Crimean-Caucasian Region, the article provides a description of the larger foraminifera biostratigraphic scheme of the Paleogene of the Southern Ukraine as a further development of the Eocene zonal nummulitic stratigraphy of the Northern Nummulitic Province by Nemkov G.I. (1967); and identifies larger foraminifera biostratigraphic units – i.e. zones and beds for the Paleocene-Eocene deposits of the Crimean Peninsula and the Northern Black Sea Region. Some of these units are traceable in the Eocene deposits on the slopes of the Ukrainian Shield and in the salt-dome structures of the Dnieper-Donets Depression. More specifically, the beds with Discocyclina seunesi are specific to the Kachian Regional Stage of the Upper Paleocen in the Crimea. The Operculina semiinvoluta, Nummulites crimensis and Assilina placentula zones in the Crimea and the beds with Ass. placentula in the Northern Black Sea Region are typical of the Lower Eocene Bakhchisaraian Regional Stage. The N. distans, N. polygyratus, smaller nummulites and Ass. tenuimarginata zones in the foothills of the Crimea and the beds with N. distans, Ass. exponens, N. atacicus in the Northern Black Sea Region are characteristic of the Simferopolian Regional Stage. The beds with N. variolarius are found in the Novopavlovkian Regional Stage of the Northern Black Sea Region and on the southern slope of the Ukrainian Shield. These are comparable to an assemblage with N. variolarius, N. orbigny of the Kievian Regional Stage of the Northern Ukraine. Beds with N. litoralis, N. concinnus, N. prestwichianus have been identified in the Almian Regional Stage of the Northern Black Sea Region and Obukhovian Regional Stage of the Ukrainian Shield and the Dnieper-Donetsk Depression. Based on larger foraminifera, the article provides correlations between the discussed biostratigrapic units and microfossil assemblages (planktonic foraminifera, calcareuos nannoplankton) recorded in the outcrops of the Bakhchisarai Stratotype Region, the eastern foothills of the Crimean Peninsula and in the Northern Black Sea Region well and borehole data. It establishes a correlation between local larger foraminifera zones and beds in the platform Ukraine and the units of the Paleocene-Eocene Provincial Zonal Scheme of the North-Eastern Peri-Tethys developed by Zakrevskaya E.Yu. (2005-2011). The larger foraminifera zones and beds of the Crimea and the Northern Black Sea Region are correlated with the larger foraminiferal zonation of the Tethyan Paleocene and Eocene (Serra-Kiel et al., 1998). The Ypresian-Lutetian boundary in the Southern Ukraine is defined within the Simferopolian Regional Stage at the base of the N. polygyratus Zone in the South-Western Crimea. In the Northern Black Sea Region, the boundary is defined within the beds with N. distans, Ass. exponens, N. atacicus.
