Development stages of Paleogene sedimentary basins of Northern Ukraine
V.Yu. Zosimovich, T.V. Shevchenko
Abstract

The Paleogene stratigraphic charts introduced in the 20th century are considered in this study. A conducted review of lithological and paleontological studies of the Paleogene regional stratigraphic subdivisions of the Northern Ukraine for the last 20 years has resulted in the revision of the existing regional stratigraphic scheme. Regional stages are considered to reflect the transgressive-regressive cyclicity of paleobasins. A detailed description of Pselian, Merlian, Kanievian, Buchakian, Kievian, Obukhovian, Mezhygorkian and Berekian regional stages is given. Pselian and Merlian regional stages are described for the first time in the present study as independent stratigraphic subdivisions. Boundaries of regional stages are reviewed. A biostratigraphic (zonal) scheme of the Paleogene has been created based on key planktonic fossils. Molluscs, spores and pollen, selachians, otoliths, and tethrapods have been also taken into consideration. The stratigraphic (correlative) intervals identified by organic-walled, calcareous and siliceous microplankton have served as a basis for regional and interregional correlations. The Paleogene regional stages have been correlated with the stages of the International Stratigraphic Chart and regional subdivisions of the Southern Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia. The problematic stratigraphic levels have been discussed. The Berekian regional stage is suggested to be divided into two independent regional stages. Directions for further research are outlined.
